◆Key finding

DealMeal's pizza price index sets a $17.99 basket median to 100 across 17 groups in Northern Virginia. Only 6.09% of basket item names state a size. Explore this local baseline, matched app findings, and how to compare your actual pizza order before fees and promotions change the total.

The DealMeal Pizza Price Index: A Northern Virginia Baseline

A first reading of delivery-app menu prices, with size gaps, restaurant mix, and checkout limits kept visible.

A pizza price index is useful only if you understand what it compares. DealMeal's September 21, 2026 Northern Virginia snapshot contains 4,498 priced pizza dishes, but 64.8% state no size in the item name. Some apps may show sizes in separate options; those options were not captured in this study.

The index basket contains 558 listings across 17 qualifying pizza groups, with a median menu price of $17.99 set to index 100. Only 34 basket listings, or 6.09%, state a size in their names. This is a local baseline of listed prices, not a size-controlled comparison, a national estimate, or evidence of prices rising or falling. Fees, taxes, tips, and applied promotions are excluded.

Quick answer

DealMeal's pizza price index compares menu listings in Northern Virginia on September 21, 2026. Its 17-group basket has a $17.99 median, normalized to 100, but only 6.09% of basket item names state a size. The full pizza-dish sample has a $19.00 median. To compare your order, check the size, restaurant branch, options, and final checkout amount. The index cannot tell you which app always offers the best value.

Key findings

  • Size is the central limitation: 2,914 of 4,498 pizza dishes, or 64.8%, state no size in their names.

  • The index spans different meal units: kids' cheese pizza sits at 57.5 and pizza supreme at 127.7, but size variants and restaurant mix prevent reading the gap as a topping premium.

  • Within-menu size comparisons are more useful: large listings cost a median $3.00 more than medium listings across 58 menus carrying both.

  • A starting price can sit well below the menu's middle: the median within-menu increase from cheapest to middle was $5.00, or 41.1%, across 277 menus.

  • One small matched app comparison showed a direction: DoorDash was dearer than Grubhub at 10 branches versus 2 among 12 non-tied branches; 26 of the 38 compared branches had tied median gaps.

What the pizza price index measures

The basket follows a fixed selection rule: include every standardized pizza group with at least 15 priced dish listings. All 17 qualifying groups are included, comprising 558 listings on 198 restaurant menus at 159 physical branches.

Each listing counts once when calculating the basket median. Each group's index value equals its median price divided by the $17.99 basket median, multiplied by 100. An index above 100 therefore indicates a group median above this basket's median; it does not mean the group delivers less food for your money.

The grouping distinguishes some recorded size variants, including kids', 10-inch, 14-inch, and 16-inch cheese pizzas. Many other groups contain listings whose sizes were not recorded. A plain group name such as “cheese pizza” cannot establish a common serving size.

Read the table as a description of listings, rather than a standardized menu price list. Every individual row has fewer than 100 observations. The sample is small at group level, and different rows come from different restaurants.

“Pepperoni pizza ultimate” qualifies on 15 listings but appears on only 10 restaurant menus, making it especially thin. The unqualified cheese group contains 62 listings at 62 menus on 54 branches; only one name states a size. Pooling all cheese-pizza groups instead produces 279 listings at a $15.19 median, compared with $13.99 for the unqualified group.

The full index spans 70.2 points, or $12.64 between its lowest and highest row medians. Four size-specific cheese rows alone span 57.5 to 104.9. Removing those four rows leaves 13 groups, 488 listings, a $18.40 basket median, and a 48.9-point spread. That sensitivity changes the basket; it does not solve the missing-size problem.

Why pizza size matters more than a headline price

DealMeal data insight

64.8% of the 4,498 pizza dish names contained no size. The selected index basket had even lower name-based size coverage: 6.09%. These figures describe the information available for analysis, not everything a customer may see in an app's customization options.

DealMeal found no size in 64.8% of pizza dish names in its Northern Virginia snapshot; sizes shown only in separate options were not captured.

Across the wider dish sample, listings labeled large had a $22.99 median and medium listings a $17.99 median. Those groups come from different restaurants. Their price gap is not a measurement of upgrading one restaurant's pizza.

Holding the menu constant gives a more useful comparison. Large listings were a median $3.00 above medium listings across 58 menus carrying both, and large was dearer at 56 of those 58. Large over small was a median $5.00 across 40 paired menus; medium over small was $2.50 across 34.

All of those paired samples contain fewer than 100 menus. They do not establish identical recipes, diameters, or portions. Use them as a reason to inspect your own size options rather than assuming a label has the same meaning everywhere.

The study does not publish a single-slice price. Its “slice” label also matched multi-slice bundles, making that category unsuitable for a single-serving comparison.

Variety medians are not topping charges

The table places pepperoni at $17.98 and the unqualified cheese group at $13.99. That cross-restaurant comparison cannot tell you what pepperoni costs to add.

Across 32 menus carrying both varieties, the median pepperoni premium over that menu's own cheese pizza was $0.40, with pepperoni dearer at 27 of the 32. Other paired differences were larger: Hawaiian was $2.98 above cheese across 16 menus, and meat lover's was $5.98 above cheese across 11.

These are small samples of differently named dishes, with incomplete size information. The practical lesson is to compare the intended varieties within your chosen menu. The index's restaurant mix cannot substitute for the restaurant's actual item or customization price.

The cheapest pizza can sit far below the menu's middle

A restaurant's lowest listed pizza price describes one available choice. It may be a different size or style from the pizza you intend to order.

Across 277 menus with at least three pizza dishes, representing 217 branches, the median cheapest price was $11.99. The median of each menu's middle price was $18.00, and the median most expensive price was $23.75.

Calculated within each menu first, the median increase from cheapest to middle was $5.00, or 41.1%. The median cheapest-to-dearest spread was $9.90. These paired differences are not obtained by subtracting the table's separate medians.

The study measured menu positions, not actual “from” advertisements. Open the exact pizza and select the relevant size and options before using its price in a comparison.

Does the same pizza cost more on a different delivery app?

DealMeal matched 863 pizza-related listing pairs across apps at 93 physical branches. Prices were identical in 68.83% of pairs. Among the 269 pairs with different prices, the median absolute gap was $1.40.

The agreement rate counts listing pairs, so branches with more matches contribute more. Restricting to pizza dishes on both sides left 816 pairs at 90 branches, with 68.63% identical prices. Adjusting the wider pizza sample for the dataset's platform-pair mix gave 68.94% agreement.

For the direction of price differences, the analysis gave each branch one median signed gap. This prevents a restaurant with many pizza listings from acting like many independent restaurants.

Grubhub vs. Uber Eats

The DoorDash-versus-Grubhub comparison detected a direction: DoorDash was dearer more often among the 12 non-tied branches, with an exact p-value of 0.0386. Another 26 of the 38 branches had tied median gaps. The dish-only check produced the same result.

This is a small local finding, not a guarantee that Grubhub is cheaper for your pizza. The other app comparisons detected no direction on only 11 and 9 non-tied branches. Those tests had limited power and do not establish equal prices.

The variety basket cannot supply an alternative app ranking. DoorDash and Uber Eats had enough observations for different numbers of groups; on their 12 common groups, the paired test detected no difference. See the same-restaurant menu-price comparison for why matched listings are more informative than overall platform medians.

Are chains cheaper than independent pizza restaurants?

The branch-level comparison did not detect a difference. Median prices were $16.99 across 121 chain branches and $16.95 across 227 independent branches, with p = 0.492. This result does not prove that the groups are equivalent or that individual restaurants charge alike.

Compare menus that fit the pizza you want, including size and style. The DealMeal Restaurant Storeboard can support restaurant exploration, but restaurant-level findings do not identify the cheapest checkout for a particular order.

Menu prices leave promotions and checkout costs unresolved

The index applies no promotions. DealMeal's separate offer data gives context: its median recorded order-level minimum was $25. The $22.99 median large listing price in this menu snapshot sits below that amount.

That comparison does not identify a promotion for any specific pizza. An offer can depend on the eligible item, basket, account, and ordering channel. Check its actual conditions before adding food to qualify.

A larger qualifying basket can still cost more than the order you intended to buy. Compare the final amount for both baskets, including applicable charges, instead of treating the discount alone as savings. The minimum-spend guide explains this decision in more detail.

A pizza promotion may require a larger basket; review the offer's eligibility and compare final spending before adding food to qualify.

Delivery, service, small-order fees, taxes, and tips were not recorded. The study therefore cannot calculate delivered totals or how fees and discounts change the app comparison.

How to compare pizza value for your next order

  1. Choose the pizza and meal size. Decide what you want to eat and share before comparing prices.

  2. Inspect the actual size options. Check dimensions and servings where provided, alongside crust and selected toppings.

  3. Compare the same branch across apps. Use matching items and options rather than platform-wide averages.

  4. Review promotion conditions. Confirm the eligible basket and whether the offer applies to your account.

  5. Compare final checkout amounts. Include applicable charges and your planned tip, and confirm the discount has applied.

The guide to using DealMeal explains how to discover and compare available offers. Complete the order-specific price check in the ordering app.

Methodology and limitations

This analysis uses DealMeal menu-price, matched-listing, and branch datasets from a single September 21, 2026 snapshot. The wider menu dataset contains 353,625 records, including 339,968 priced items. Selecting positively priced items whose names or standardized dish labels contain “pizza” gives 4,937 pizza-related items across 509 platform-specific restaurant menus at 391 branches. Restricting to dishes leaves 4,498 observations.

The basket includes every standardized pizza group with at least 15 priced dish observations: 17 groups, 558 listings, 198 menus, and 159 branches. Index values equal 100 times a group's median divided by the $17.99 basket median. Listings are counted individually without restaurant weighting. Medians and percentiles use nearest-rank calculations.

Grouping recognizes some size variants, so unqualified names often represent listings without captured size information. Only 34 of 558 basket names state a size. Separate size-option lists were unavailable, and standardized grouping was not independently validated. The index is not size-controlled.

Name-based selection also misses some pizzas named without the word “pizza.” A broader name-or-category selection adds 2,182 dishes, producing 6,680 observations at a $19.55 median, compared with $19.00 in the main dish sample. This sensitivity is reported separately and does not redefine the index basket.

Within-menu size and variety comparisons hold the platform-specific restaurant menu constant, but do not establish identical portions or recipes. Every published group row and paired size or variety sample has fewer than 100 observations. The slice category mixes single slices and bundles, while catering items affect the wider expensive tail. Outliers were retained.

Cross-app analysis uses 863 priced matched pairs at 93 branches, including 47 non-dish pairs. Directional tests use one median signed gap per branch and two-sided exact sign tests. DoorDash versus Grubhub gives p = 0.0386 on 12 non-tied branches; the other pairs give p = 1.000 on 11 and 9. The common-variety DoorDash-versus-Uber-Eats comparison gives p = 0.715 across 12 groups. These are distinct tests with different comparison units.

The matching process supplied no pairs with differing recorded sizes. Restricting to size-identified pairs therefore cannot independently test whether size mismatches explain price gaps. No independent menu-price replication is available. Coverage is Northern Virginia, and one snapshot establishes neither national prices nor trends. Promotions, fees, taxes, and tips were not modeled.

Frequently asked questions

What does index 100 mean?

It represents the $17.99 median of DealMeal's 558-listing Northern Virginia basket on September 21, 2026. Only 6.09% of basket item names state a size, so 100 is a listing-price reference, not the price of a standardized pizza.

What is the typical pizza menu price in this study?

The median was $19.00 across 4,498 pizza dishes, with mixed and incompletely recorded sizes. The selected index basket had a separate $17.99 median. Both exclude checkout charges and applied promotions.

Is Grubhub cheaper than DoorDash for pizza?

Among 38 matched branches, DoorDash had a higher median listing price gap at 10 and Grubhub at 2; 26 were tied. The direction was statistically detectable on that small sample, but it does not establish the cheapest app for your order or final checkout.

How much more does a large pizza cost than a medium?

Across 58 menus carrying both size labels, the median within-menu premium was $3.00. Check your restaurant's size, recipe, and options; the sample does not define a universal upgrade charge.

Does the index show pizza inflation?

No. It uses one September 21, 2026 snapshot. A baseline alone cannot measure an increase or decrease over time.

Do these prices include delivery fees and discounts?

No. They are listed menu prices before applied promotions, delivery and service charges, small-order fees, taxes, and tips. Check the ordering app for your final amount.

Use the baseline to ask better price questions

The index helps explain why a pizza price alone is incomplete: size, restaurant mix, and menu position all change what you are comparing. A lower listing price deserves closer inspection of the actual food and options.

Compare size choices within a restaurant, match your intended pizza across apps, and review the final amount after eligible promotions. Those steps turn a listing-price reference into a decision about the meal you want.
