◆Key finding

DealMeal analyzed 180,068 DoorDash and Grubhub offers to test whether better food deals are farther away. Advertised cash value barely moved with distance: DoorDash's median stayed at $5 across every band, while one narrower Grubhub percentage-off pattern favored nearby restaurants.

Are Better Food Deals Farther Away? What 180,068 Offers Show

Do better food deals appear at restaurants farther away? DealMeal analyzed 180,068 cleaned DoorDash and Grubhub offers with usable distance data from July 25 through September 2, 2026. The short answer is no: advertised discount value barely changed with distance. The clearest evidence comes from DoorDash, where the median cash value was $5 in every distance band from under one mile to 25 miles.

Distance did affect the type of promotion shoppers encountered. Free-item and BOGO offers became less common farther away on DoorDash, while fixed-dollar offers became more common. Grubhub also showed one meaningful exception: percentage discounts fell from a median 30% within one mile to 20% beyond five miles. Yet Grubhub's overall cash value remained almost unrelated to distance.

Quick answer

Better advertised food deals were neither farther away nor consistently closer. Across 110,791 valued DoorDash offers, distance had a negligible association with cash value: Spearman's ρ was +0.023, explaining just 0.05% of the variance. The median value stayed at $5 in all eight distance bands. Grubhub's overall cash-value relationship was also negligible at ρ = −0.036, although its percentage-off rate declined with distance.

Key findings

  • DoorDash's median advertised cash value was $5 in every one of eight distance bands, based on 110,791 valued offers.

  • DoorDash cash value had a correlation of ρ = +0.023 with distance, accounting for only 0.05% of the variance.

  • Median dollar-off amounts were stable across all bands: $5 on DoorDash and $10 on Grubhub.

  • Grubhub percentage discounts declined from a median 30% within one mile to 20% beyond five miles, with ρ = −0.250 across 3,833 percentage offers.

  • DoorDash's promotion mix changed with distance: free-item offers fell from 7.5% to 2.0%, while dollar-off offers rose from 35.8% to 40.2%.

  • Uber Eats could not be included because none of its 73,066 offers in the dataset had a distance value.

Food deals by distance: the money stayed flat

A headline discount is not always a dollar value. A percentage needs a qualifying spend, while a fixed-dollar offer already states its value. DealMeal therefore calculated cash value using percentage discounts at their stated minimum, applying a cap where one existed, and included every dollar-off offer with a stated amount.

That produced 133,383 offers with a computable cash value: 110,791 on DoorDash and 22,592 on Grubhub. DoorDash delivered the most decisive result. Its median cash value did not change once across a twenty-five-fold increase in distance.

The Grubhub medians moved between $5 and $10 without a consistent direction. Its correlation between distance and cash value was −0.036, explaining 0.13% of the variance across 22,592 valued offers. The farthest Grubhub band contained only 980 valued offers, so its $5 median should not be treated as evidence of a downward trend.

DealMeal data insight

DoorDash's flat $5 median is more informative than a tiny p-value. With 110,791 observations, even a trivial relationship can be statistically significant. The effect size shows the practical reality: distance explained only 0.05% of the variation in advertised cash value.

Why statistical significance does not mean better distant deals

Several relationships in the dataset produced extremely small p-values. DoorDash minimum spend, for example, had a p-value of 1.6 × 10−40. Read alone, that number could sound decisive. Its correlation with distance was only +0.039, however, accounting for 0.15% of the variance.

The same distinction applies to cash value, percentage rates, and dollar amounts. Five of eight tested relationships were statistically significant while explaining only 0.05% to 0.20% of the variance. A large sample can detect a microscopic association; it cannot make that association useful to a shopper.

The Grubhub exception: percentage discounts were deeper nearby

One association was large enough to matter. Among 3,833 Grubhub percentage-off offers, the median rate was 30% within one mile, 25% from one to five miles, and 20% beyond five miles. The correlation was −0.250, explaining 6.25% of the variance.

This finding has two limits. Percentage-off promotions represented only 13.6% of Grubhub's 28,201 offers with distance data. Fixed-dollar promotions represented 67% and held at a $10 median in every distance band. Once both instruments were included, Grubhub's overall cash-value correlation fell to −0.036.

In other words, Grubhub's percentage headline became smaller with distance, but the typical amount of advertised money did not follow it. That distinction is essential when comparing percentage-off and dollar-off deals.

Dollar discounts and minimum spends did not change

Fixed-dollar offers were unusually stable. DoorDash showed a $5 median in each of the eight distance bands, while Grubhub showed $10 in every band. Together, those results cover 72,609 dollar-off offers.

DoorDash's median minimum spend was also $25 in every band, based on 115,024 offers with a threshold. The nearest and farthest quartiles told the same story: DoorDash held at $5 off a $25 minimum, and Grubhub held at $10 off.

For shoppers, this means expanding the search radius did not unlock a larger typical fixed discount or a lower typical DoorDash threshold. It mainly expanded the restaurant choices available under similar promotion terms.

Shopper compares identical $5 discounts from nearby and farther restaurants with final costs left unresolved.
Equal headline discounts can still produce different final carts because delivery fees and other charges were not measured.

Distance changed the deal type more than the deal value

Although the advertised money stayed flat, DoorDash's promotion mix shifted across the range. Free-item offers made up 7.5% of offers under one mile and 2.0% from 10 to 25 miles, a 3.8-fold decline. BOGO offers also fell from 15.3% to 11.7%.

Fixed-dollar offers moved the other way, rising from 35.8% under one mile to 40.2% in the farthest band. This helps explain why cash value remained stable even as some promotion categories became less common.

The data does not establish why this mix changed. Sponsored placement fell from 11.63% nearby to 2.96% in the farthest band, and sponsored DoorDash offers independently favor free-item and BOGO promotions. The apparent distance pattern may therefore be partly a sponsorship pattern. Chain status could not be tested because the relevant field was false on every row.

What shoppers should do with this finding

  1. Do not increase your radius only to chase a larger headline discount. The typical advertised dollar value did not improve with distance in this analysis.

  2. Expand distance for restaurant choice. A wider radius may reveal more cuisines or merchants, but not reliably better discount value.

  3. Compare the final cart. This dataset did not include delivery fees, service fees, taxes, tips, or travel costs. A farther restaurant can carry the same discount and still cost more overall.

  4. Check the promotion format. Nearby DoorDash results showed more free-item and BOGO offers, while farther results leaned more toward fixed-dollar discounts.

  5. Confirm the qualifying items and minimum. A large percentage can be worth less than a smaller fixed-dollar offer when caps and thresholds apply.

  6. Compare more than one app. Platform deal mixes differ. DealMeal's guide explains how to discover and compare food deals without treating the headline percentage as the final answer.

What “farther away” means in this analysis

The cleaned dataset had a median restaurant distance of 4.22 miles, a 90th percentile of 8.22 miles, and a 99th percentile of 12.31 miles. The maximum accepted value was 24.84 miles. This is a delivery-radius question: “far” usually means five to twelve miles, not a restaurant in another city.

The measurements came from 206 observation cells concentrated in Northern Virginia. They represent distance from DealMeal's observation points, not from an individual shopper's home. The DealMeal app works across the United States, while DealMeal.co currently showcases selected regional examples on the web.

Methodology and limitations

The primary dataset consisted of 39 DealMeal Labs daily snapshots from July 25 through September 2, 2026, covering every calendar day except August 29. Offers were deduplicated by date, platform, store identifier, and offer title. Six non-USD titles were excluded, leaving 253,204 distinct daily offers.

Distance was present for 151,937 DoorDash offers and 28,201 Grubhub offers, but for none of 73,066 Uber Eats offers. DealMeal removed 56 rows at exactly zero miles and 14 rows above 25 miles, leaving 180,068 offers for analysis. The fourteen extreme rows all belonged to one non-restaurant cosmetics merchant and reached as far as 2,517.63 miles. Removing them barely changed the mean and did not change rank correlations to three decimal places, but prevented a false range from distorting charts.

Cash value combined two promotion instruments. For a percentage offer with a stated minimum, value equaled the percentage multiplied by the minimum, limited by a stated cap when present. For a dollar-off offer, value equaled the advertised dollar amount. BOGO and free-item offers could not be assigned a cash value because the applicable item price was unavailable.

Associations were calculated within each platform using Spearman rank correlation. DoorDash and Grubhub were not pooled because their distance distributions and deal mixes differed. Percentiles used the nearest-rank method.

These findings concern advertised discounts, not total order cost. The snapshots did not contain delivery fees, service fees, taxes, tips, or signed-in personalization. DoorDash provided a distance but no coordinates, so the analysis cannot support a map or city comparison. Restaurant names were not normalized, chain status was unusable, and the older thirteen-month archive had no distance field. The results are therefore a current DoorDash-and-Grubhub snapshot, not a market-wide or historical claim.

Frequently asked questions

Are food delivery discounts better at restaurants farther away?

No consistent improvement appeared. DoorDash's median advertised cash value was $5 in all eight distance bands, and both platforms showed negligible relationships between distance and overall cash value.

Were food deals better at nearby restaurants?

Not overall. Nearby DoorDash restaurants showed more free-item and BOGO offers, and nearby Grubhub percentage discounts were deeper, but the typical advertised cash value did not materially improve.

Why did Grubhub percentage discounts fall with distance?

The analysis establishes the pattern, not its cause. Percentage-off offers were also a minority of Grubhub's promotions, so the pattern did not translate into a meaningful overall cash-value decline.

Does a farther restaurant cost more after delivery fees?

This dataset cannot answer that. It measured advertised promotions but did not include delivery fees or final checkout totals. The same discount can still produce a different final bill.

Why was Uber Eats excluded?

None of the 73,066 Uber Eats offers in the current dataset had a distance value. Imputing distance would not recover a reliable platform comparison.

How far away were the restaurants?

After cleaning, the median was 4.22 miles and the 99th percentile was 12.31 miles. The analysis accepted distances above zero and up to 25 miles.

The bottom line

Better advertised food deals were not farther away. DoorDash's median cash value held at $5 across every distance band, and Grubhub's overall cash value also showed no practical distance relationship. The meaningful difference was promotion format: nearby listings included more free-item and BOGO offers, while fixed-dollar deals became more common farther out.

Use distance to widen your restaurant choices, not as a shortcut to bigger savings. Compare qualifying items, thresholds, and the final cart before ordering.
